We here at ITL have spoken about security and online safety in the past, Today We wish to address the recent outbreak of a nasty Facebook virus, once clicked This virus will:
Download a malicious piece of software called a Keylogger, see example below.
What is a keylogger?
“Keystroke logging, often referred to as keylogging or keyboard capturing, is the action of recording the keys struck on a keyboard. Typically covertly, so that the person using the keyboard is unaware that their actions are being monitored. ”
What This Means?
1. This Virus has the ability to compromise your Facebook account post on your wall and in messages posing as you or your friends.
2. Steal your financial and other personal data
How to avoid?
Don’t click on links, even from friends.
Verify ALL URL’s via address bar.
Most Legitimate websites with video content now use HTML5 and do not require any external applications for proper playback.
Let’s be brutally honest, you will most likely NEVER be in a viral video or photo!
How to Clean up
Install and Run Emsisoft Emergency Kit (EEK):
Double click EmergencyKitScanner.exe to install EEK
When the installation of EEK is complete the Emergency Kit scanner will run.
NOTE: Make sure to enable PUPs detection.
Click “Yes” to Update Emsisoft Emergency Kit
Under “Scan” click-on “Custom scan.”
download, install, update and do a Threat Scan with Malwarebytes
Once you have preformed the scans and are sure you system is reasonably clean
follow Facebook’s help page for hacked accounts using the help link search the keyword “hacked”
Help a compromised friend
go to your friends account
click the “…” on the page
Click “Report”
Click ‘I want to help (friend name)”
Click “I think someone else is using his/her account”
Click ” make aware”
